Here’s a bit more about them:

St Mary’s Heritage Group, Gateshead, has been established to support the work carried out at St Mary’s Heritage Centre.

Standing high above Gateshead’s quayside, this building, once Gateshead’s original church and therefore often referred to as it’s ‘Mother Church’ was transformed into a Heritage Centre in 2008.  Dating back to the late 13th century, it may well be the third building to stand on the site and it is a fine example of a medieval town church.

Sadly, due to serious fires in 1979 and 1983, many of the internal fittings and stained glass were destroyed but the stones themselves bear evidence of this building’s rich history. St Mary’s is Grade one listed and well worth a visit!

Surrounding the building is St Mary’s graveyard. We have details of all burials which took place here – from the prominent townspeople to the plague victims. Our largest tomb is the Trollope Mausoleum which is a Grade II listed monument.

Regular events are held and we also have a number of volunteering opportunities.

You can find out more information about this volunteer group and any events they’re putting on, on their website – click here.

  1. If you’ve never been to St Mary’s before, then come and pay a visit – it’s a wonderful piece of original Gateshead history. And if you know it well, then why not consider supporting it by joining our new group? For an application form email smghh@hotmail.co.uk

And for supporters of “The Heed” – there’s a great exhibition all about Gateshead football club. But it’s only on until September 11th so hurry down!

Bank Holiday Sunday sees our Chancel Cafe open with home baking to tempt you. Open 11am – 2pm.

    See you soon!

  2. Are you sure this blog site should not be called “Gateshead.com” it appears to exceed the boundary of Low Fell on a regular basis, which is fine I’m all for supporting Gateshead and indeed all of the North East but you guys named it LowFell.com you must have had a reason for that!

  3. Hello Bruce!

Yes, we thought this might come up at some point. Low-Fell.Com isn’t just a site about Low Fell as a suburb, it’s also a place where Low Fell residents and frequenters can come to learn about everything going on around the North East. So it works both ways.

We promote local businesses and organisations to Low Fell and the outside world, but we also promote the outside world to local businesses, residents and frequenters. If that makes sense! :)

So from time to time, we are going to be posting up events and mentioning people and places from outside Low Fell if we think it’s something people should know about or maybe pop along to.
